This book helps place in perspective what we think we know now about the great beyond. The history of the entire concept of the "Milky Way" galaxy and the widespread use of the term "galaxy" before astronomer's perceived that there was more than one galaxy was most revealing. This book has taught me to be a little more careful when I speculate about things yet unknown. What the author saw as most probable turned out to be not so. None of the speculation about the "Milky Way" had it as our "galaxy"--it was simply a mysterious band of matter that seemed to move both this way and that. You may want to skip parts of this book, but don't skip it altogether.

History of astronomy George Forbes 9781174872266 Books Reviews
We all need to know where we have been to appreciate where we are and where we are going. This history gives a good background.
Be warned this edition is not in Afrikaans. It is entirely the same as the English edition I bought. If you are expecting this book to be in Afrikaans, you will be wasting your money.
An early history, but still contains much valuable and interesting information. Enjoyable to read and a nice introduction to the material. Recommended to budding astronomers.
Makes me feel like a dope compared to these brilliant men of past generations. Our modern sophisticated tools are based on these men's genius
This book is much smaller than I anticipated when I ordered it. It took just a few hours to read through and there was no new information compared to more complete books I have read in the past. If you have a teenager who might what to see what the history of astronomy is about, this would be a fine book for them. If you have been interested for quite a while and either read other books or viewed programs on TV in this subject, there is little to find in this book.
Ah, a wonderful book that begins with prehistoric people's opinions of the of the stars! The Chinese and Chaldeans are quickly brought into the picture. It goes very linearly through time right up to the early 1900's
This book was written in 1909, but don't let the old author's date put you off. If you want to find a book that takes a detailed (included full references) look at the early history of astronomy right through to Newton's viewpoint this is the book for you.
The only drawback it I would have LOVED to have seen the illustrations that must have been in the very original printing - but this is still worthy of 5 stars.
It is neither stiff nor dry reading either. It has a balance of approval on all the cultures and peoples who helped push the science of astronomy ever forward. It is more than a primer at 146 pages, but not so encumbered with data as to be intimidating to even a high school student needed great reference material for a report.
